US denounces repression of the press in Turkey

Washington, Nov 1, 2016 (AFP) - Washington denounced on Monday attacks on press freedom in Turkey, after Turkish police arrest the chief editor and journalists of Cumhuriyet, the main opposition newspaper.

"The United States is deeply concerned by what appears to be an increasing pressure of political power over the media linked to the opposition, mainly the arrest today of Murat Sabuncu, managing editor of one of the most respected newspapers in the country, the Cumhuriyet," said spokesman for American diplomacy John Kirby told a news conference.

Kirby also condemned "the closure over the weekend, more media and the arrest of many journalists and editorialists," months after the coup aborted in mid-July.

"The United States supports the Turkish government's efforts to prosecute those responsible for the attempted coup of July 15, but as allies and friends Turkey urge the Turkish government to ensure that the rule of law and individual freedoms are respected," said Kirby.
