The protest was carried out by the NGO Rio de Paz, in front of Avenida Princesa Isabel. The 595 scattered masks represent the 81 senators, 513 federal deputies and the president of the Republic. They were painted red because, according to the organizers, "it symbolizes the shame that should be stamped on the face of the Brazilian political class." The Group of Seven (G-7) has today reached agreements on sanctions against Russia and global treaties, overcoming tensions over two issues that threatened to put US President Donald Trump on the other six global leaders. The nations have agreed to maintain sanctions against Moscow for their interference in Ukraine until the obligations of a peace agreement negotiated in Minsk, Belarus, are fulfilled. We are also ready to take more restrictive measures to increase the costs of Russian stocks, "said a statement prepared by the seven leaders. The new president of France, Emmanuelle Macron, will host Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday in Paris for the first meeting between the two leaders. "Talking to Russia is indispensable," Macron said. "There are a lot of problems that we will not solve without talking to the Russians, especially about Syria." "I'll talk to him about it, without concessions on Ukraine," he added. On trade

Police released images of the man's security cameras that exploded at the Manchester show on the night of the attack and asked for more information about his final days. Authorities said they made great strides in unraveling the plot behind last week's attack, but acknowledged that there are still issues to be clarified. Today, the UK has reduced the level of terrorist threat in the country from "critical" to "stern," although there are still agitations among residents trying to take advantage of the weekend's extended holiday. Police and soldiers were sent to reinforce the safety of football matches, shows and other major events. The attack left 23 dead and about 120 injured. Photos released by police show Salman Abedi the night of the attack, wearing sneakers, jeans, a dark jacket and a baseball cap. Pope visits metal workers and denounces those who exploit workers

Pope Benedict warned today of the difficulties workers face in a globalized world during a visit to a steel factory in Genoa, where he stressed how work gives people a sense of human dignity. The pontiff also denounced those who exploit workers. The visit focuses on those whose lives have been made precarious by years of economic crisis, including Italy, where a high unemployment rate, especially among young adults, has caused many to leave the country. "An illness of the economy is the gradual transformation of entrepreneurs into speculators," the pontiff said. "The speculator does not love his trades, he does not love the workers and he only sees them as means to profit". He condemned the political system that "sometimes seems to encourage speculators instead of those who invest and believe in work." The Pope also denounced those who say that workers only work for money. "They deny the dignity of work," he said. "It is throu

Afghanistan: terrorist attack kills at least 18 people in eastern Afghanistan

At least 18 people, mostly civilians, were killed on Saturday when a car bomb attacked a convoy of provincial security forces in eastern Afghanistan, an interior ministry official said. Najib Danish, the ministry's deputy spokesman, said the target of the bombing was a group of guards who provide security for US forces in Khost province, but most of the casualties in the attack were civilians. Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, claimed responsibility for the attack in a press release. Taliban insurgents have stepped up attacks on Afghan security forces since announcing their spring offensive last month. Security forces have been attacked near the province's main bus station, Danish said. "Six other civilians, including two small children, were injured in the attack," he said. The attack, which occurred on a road between the bus station and the provincial football stadium, damaged or destroyed about a dozen shops and several vehicles. The attac

Israel: Palestinian prisoners end hunger strike after agreement with authorities

Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners on Saturday closed a 40-day hunger strike after reaching a compromise with Israel for additional family visits, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials. Israeli prison service spokeswoman Nicole Englander said the detainees had declared an end to the strike this morning. She said that this happened after Israel reached an agreement with the Palestinian Authority and the Red Cross for prisoners to receive a second family visit per month. The main claim of the prisoners was the improvement in prison conditions. The hunger strike has evolved into one of the longest protests with so many participants since the capture of Palestinian territories by Israel in 1967 with the country's expansion into the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip. Englander said 1,578 prisoners took part in the hunger strike and 834 ended their fast on Saturday. She said that 18 were being treated in hospitals. Many Israelis see prisoners as terro

Egypt: Islamic State assumes responsibility for attack on Christian who left 29 dead

The Islamic state said on Saturday that a team of its gunmen carried out the attack on a bus full of Coptic Christian pilgrims on Friday, which Egyptian officials said killed 29 people. Emaq, the media arm of the EI, said a "security" team of gunmen from the terrorist group attacked the bus specifically because of its Coptic occupiers, according to the SITE Intel Group, which monitors extremist activity online. The attack prompted Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi to launch air strikes on areas that the Egyptian military said were militant training camps in Derna, eastern Libya. Sisi said the armed men trained and planned the attack on the Libyan camps, but provided no evidence of the claim. The Islamic state has not been present in Derna since the end of 2015.  Source: Dow Jones Newswires.

That we speak very calmly. I have seen someone who listens and who is willing to work. US: pressure on supposed secret channel between Russia and Trump increases

Some of President Donald Trump's top aides refuse to comment on rumors that Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump and White House adviser, would have created a secret communication channel, along with a Russia, between the transition team of Trump and the Kremlin. Questions about the reports came as Trump's national security adviser H. McMaster and economic adviser Gary Cohn met with the media in Italy on Saturday shortly before Trump returned to Washington after his first overseas trip as president. McMaster and Cohn declined to comment on the new revelations about Kushner's communications with Russia's ambassador to the United States, Sergey Kislyak. "We will not comment on Jared," Cohn said. McMaster says that, in general, "we have return channel communications with multiple countries," and doing so "allows you to communicate discreetly."  Source: Associated Press.

G7 ends unconfirmed climate, condemns 'unfair trading practices'

Imagem
The summit of leaders of the world's richest democracies ended without a unanimous agreement on climate change as the Trump administration plans to take more time to say whether the US will remain in the Paris agreement. The other six G7 powers have agreed to meet their previous commitment to implement the Paris agreement to control greenhouse gases to combat climate change. The G-7's final statement expresses "understanding" for the US review process. Earlier, Trump said through Twitter that he will take a decision on the Paris Accord next week. G-7 leaders also struck a deal to recognize Trump's stance on trade. They kept the prohibition to protectionism constant in the group's earlier statements, but included a statement on Saturday that "they will stand firm against all unfair trade practices." German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the G-7 talks on climate change were "unsatisfactory." On international trade, Merkel sa

Spain: Rajoy warns of economic consequences of separation of Catalonia Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has warned business leaders in Catalonia on Saturday of "terrible economic consequences" if separatists gain independence for the region. Speaking in the coastal town of Sitges, Rajoy told the business group of the Círculo de Economia that if Catalonia departed from Spain, the region could lose up to 30% of its GDP and would have to seek readmission to the European Union. Catalonia accounts for 20% of Spain's GDP and a population of more than seven million people. Rajoy compared the campaign for the referendum on independence to the recent UK vote to leave the European Union. "The British were told Brexit would be great, and later some of them saw that it was an exaggeration and they had believed in lies," said Rajoy. The prime minister reiterated his pledge that his government will not allow the referendum, which he called un
